Improve Your Family’s Health And Protect Your Cooling System With These Tips
If your family’s health concerns you, you may clean your home as much as possible to keep it comfortable. But one of the things you may struggle with is keeping your home free of allergens. Many of these allergens can use your cooling system to wreak havoc on your family.
Your indoor cooling system consists of an indoor air handler, air ducts and air registers. All of these intricate parts can build up with debris over time. Some of the debris can blow back into your home and make your family vulnerable to allergies.
The debris inside your air ducts and air handler can also affect your cooling system’s performance. A poorly performing cooling system allows your home to build up with heat and humidity, which allows mold and other dangerous pathogens to grow and thrive.
You can protect your family’s health and cooling system with the tips listed below.
The Culprits Behind Your Poor Air Quality and Allergies
You might not think about it often, or if at all, but your indoor unit’s closet can affect your cooling system and home. Air should be able to circulate into the closet without any problems. But if dust, dirt, and other contaminants inhabit the closet, they can prevent air from moving freely through it.
Your air handler’s evaporator coil and other parts can pull in the closet’s debris during operation. Although the unit’s air filter blocks most of the debris, some particles can eventually pass through the filter and enter your air ducts. As air travels through your air duct, it picks up debris and transports it to the rooms of your home.
A clogged evaporator coil can also leak or build-up with condensation. The coil’s wet surface can eventually become a breeding ground for black mold. Black mold doesn’t remain in one place once it shows up. The fungi can become airborne and travel throughout your house.
The symptoms of black mold can mimic the symptoms of other health conditions, including the flu and common cold. You or someone you love might develop a chronic cough, headache or fever that doesn’t go away with treatment. Other individuals may feel exhausted, lethargic and even nauseous.
By being proactive in your home, you can keep the problems above at bay.
Take Steps to Solve Your Problems
One of the things you can do right now is clean out your air handler’s closet with a high-powered vacuum. Direct the nozzle toward the corners of the room. If you can safely reach the ceiling, clean it. Also, vacuum the niches and edges of your air handler. Dust can hide in this location.
Use a slightly damp cloth to wipe down the surface of the air handler. Be sure to dry the surface thoroughly to prevent rust from developing on it.
If you feel comfortable doing so, cut power to your cooling system and clean the evaporator coil inside the air handler with white vinegar. If you remove your air filter, you should see the coil. If you don’t see the coil, remove the covering from it with a screwdriver. Place a large tarp beneath air handler to catch the vinegar as it drips to the floor.
Finally, empty the drainage pan beneath the evaporator coil. The pan should slide out when you grasp it. If the pan doesn’t come out easily, try to clean it with an absorbent cloth. Replace your air filter and return power to your cooling system.
For your air ducts, you can reduce the debris inside them with your vacuum. You’ll need to access the ducts through your air registers. Remove the grated covers from the registers, then use the head of your vacuum hose to break down the debris.
The tips above are temporary measures against the allergens in your home. For a detailed and thorough cleaning, contact the experts at HELP Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Drains for air treatment and air conditioning services.
