Bigger Is Better

Your system is measured in tons, which refers to the amount of heat that is removed from the home within an hour. One ton removes 12,000 BTUs of heat from the home each hour. To cool one square foot of your home, an estimated 25 BTUs are needed.
Using these calculations, cooling a 2,000 square foot home would require around 50,000 BTUs, which would be offered by a 4-ton unit. If a higher ton unit was installed in this home, the system would short-cycle.
Short-cycling shuts down the air conditioner once it reaches its desired temperature. When the cooling stops, humidity will no longer be removed from the air inside your home, resulting in unhealthy moisture and potential mold growth.
You may think a bigger system will cool your home faster and more efficiently, but the on/off shortcycling actually uses more energy.
Change Filters Only When Dirty
Air is moved from the outside, conditioned and then brought into your home through ductwork and vents. During this movement of air, dirt, dust and other particles will also enter your home.
Your system’s filters will trap a large portion of dirt, dust and debris, but these filters will clog up over time. You most likely know how to check your filters, but most homeowners replace their filters every three months only.
A filter that appears brown and light black will obviously need to be changed. Even if it looks clean, dirt, dust and other allergens may still be clogging up your filter.
If you or a family member suffer with uncomfortable symptoms related to nasal allergies, consider changing your filter once a month even if it looks clean. Opting for a HEPA filter is your best option, since they trap the highest amount of particles.
Moving the Thermostat Up and Down Will Heat and Cool Home Faster
Your heating and cooling system is designed to condition air at a balanced pace. Bumping the temperature setting up or down will not heat and cool your home any faster than setting a temperature and forgetting it.
In fact, constantly moving the thermostat up and down will cause your system to turn off and on more. This will not only interfere with the system’s ability to heat or cool your home, but it will also waste energy, which can hurt the environment and your finances.
Heating and cooling uses half of your home’s total usage of energy, so it is smart to find ways to conserve. Use a programmable thermostat to set a desired temperature and then forget it.
